Fog Cannons Help Slow Coral Bleaching, Barrier Reef Study

OZmist, Southern Cross University Cloud Brightening Study on Coral Bleaching

Scientists from Southern Cross University approached OZmist for one of our fog cannons, to faciliate their research into Coral Bleaching & thermal impact on the Great Barrier Reef. This Channel 4 Report covers the test of spraying seawater via a modified OZmist 45m Fog Cannon to create mini ‘clouds’ to temper the heat and conditions that lead to Coral Bleaching.

OZmist's cannons being used as an innovative approach to tackle big environmental issues, even at sea!

Fog Cannons Help Slow Coral Bleaching, Great Barrier Reef Study. In late 2021 Senior Lecturer Dan Harrison from SCU’s National Marine Science Centre contacted the team at OZmist with criteria of needing a cloud creating mist system to help test solutions to solve the impact of coral bleaching on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Run over peak summer months & multiple sea trials the scientific team used one of our 45m fog cannons (adapted for sea water) with great effect, to create low level ‘clouds’, thus avoiding coral bleaching temperatures reaching ‘tipping point’.

The story was aired on Channel 4 and is well worth a watch, but here is the footage of our cannon in action if you only have 90 seconds to spare.
